Hormone Replacement Therapy
HRT Side Effects

|
A federally funded study by the National Heart, Lung and Blood
Institute (NHLBI) was halted prematurely when researchers
determined the side effects of Prempro were so severe that
they could no longer give the pharmaceutical to patients.
The study conducted by the NHLBI concluded that Prempro
increased the risk of heart attacks, strokes, blood clots and
breast cancer.

Detailed Information on Prempro
Side Effects
The study determined that women who were given Prempro were
more likely to develop serious problems compared to those in the
placebo group. The statistics are alarming:
-
26% increase in
breast cancer
-
41% increase in
strokes
-
100% increase in
blood clots
-
22% increase in
incidents of cardiovascular disease
Claude Lenfant, M.D., the director of NHLBI, commented on the side
effects of Prempro:
"We have long sought
the answer to the question: Does postmenopausal hormone therapy
prevent heart disease and, if it does, what are the risks? The
bottom-line answer from WHI is that this combined form of
hormone therapy is unlikely to benefit the heart. The
cardiovascular and cancer risks of estrogen plus progestin
outweigh any benefits -- and a 26 percent increase in breast
cancer risk is too high a price to pay, even if there were a
heart benefit."
On February 28, 2003, Wyeth announced that Prempro may be
associated with memory loss in patients above the age of 65.
