A
burn victim was awarded an exceptionally high verdict of $425,000
in another Douglas County case. The 18-year-old plaintiff, a
pregnant homemaker, was burned while trying to escape from the
smoke-filled upper floor of an apartment house during a fire. The
fire was allegedly caused by the defendant landlord's negligence
in using flammable formica glue in close proximity to a gas pilot
light of a kitchen stove. The fumes allegedly ignited and carried
the flame to the open container of glue and the landlord attempted
to carry the flaming container outside. Some of the glue was
allegedly spilled on a staircase near an exit. The plaintiff
claimed that the defendant should have extinguished the pilot
light of the stove before beginning work and should have warned
her of the danger of the fire. The plaintiff's burns covered 16%
to 18% of her body and resulted in permanent disfigurement of her
hands, arms and knees. With medical specials of $20,000, the
Verdict Expectancy is only $100, 000. (Palma v.
Buras et al., Omaha, No. 745-272, May, 1980.)
